9 Ways to Make Your Home Winter Ready

U-Save when you make sure your home is ready for cold weather!

Autumn and winter weather can be the most challenging seasons when it comes to wear and tear on your home’s structure, finish, appliances, and weather-resistance features, as well as the most challenging time for your budget in terms of energy costs. Here are 9 easy ways you can make sure your home is ready for Old Man Winter;

  1. Inspect your roof for signs of problems, such as damaged shingles or flashing, failing sealants or caulk around vent pipes, or other protrusions.

  2. Clean gutters and downspouts of leaves and other debris. Tightening gutter nails and inspecting the roof for the kinds of problems mentioned above should always be part of the job.

  3. Check your attic to make sure insulation is intact and be sure to look for signs of critter intrusions, such as droppings.

  4. While you’re in the attic, also inspect the roof trusses and connecting hardware and look for any signs of leaks; moisture, water stains, mold, or daylight showing through the roof.

  5. Inspect window caulking and weather-stripping on doors, and repair as needed.

  6. Make sure that the proper supply and return air vents are open and clear of all objects and furniture.

  7. Install storm doors and windows.

  8. Have your heating system and vents inspected and, if necessary, cleaned.

  9. Inspect the batteries and test your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector.
